2. VISAS
A tourist visa is necessary for your stay in India. Contact the Indian
Embassy/High Commission or Indian Consulate in your country. If you are
applying for a visa by mail, it is very important to do so well in advance
as it can take some time.
3. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Please note that in order for us to confirm your booking, you must be in
possession of full Overseas Travel and Medical Insurance, covering the
entire period of your stay in India / Nepal / Sri Lanka and Maladives.
No specific injections are required for India however we recommend the
following for your own safety. Please consult your family doctor for exact
details at least one month prior to your departure.
a : Paludrine tablets. Against malaria. These tablets to
be taken first on the day of your departure for India and each day during
your stay until one month after your return to Europe.
b : Vivotif. Against tyfus. Three capsules to be taken
orally approx one month before departure.
c : Havrix Against hepatitis.
NOTE : If you wear contact lenses, suggest you bring eye drops with
you as your eyes can become drier due to the hot weather.
We suggest you carry the following with you:
- Aspirin.
- Norflox - the best for tummy upsets due to change of food.
- Plasters and a tube of benzadrine / germolene (disinfectant
cream).
- Autan - cream or spray insect repellant.
- Cream for sun protection.
|
Please note that in almost all medical stores throughout India,
medicine and even anti-biotics are readily available, very often given
without a prescription.
4. CLOTHING
- Easy and comfortable clothing in cotton or linen is recommended.
Synthetics, short shorts and revealing tops are not at all suitable
- A jacket and tie is not necessary, however smart shirts with long
trousers are recommended for dinners / stays in good hotels.
- Think about a hat or cap against the sun and flat comfortable
shoes.
- For evenings outside, long trousers / skirts and long sleeved
shirts / blouses are a good choice against eventual insect bites.
- For camel and elephant safaris, long and loose-fitting trousers
are highly recommended.
|
5. TEMPLE VISITS
Depending on the religion, the following rules must be observed:
- No cigarettes, leather, (i.e.belts, shoes or bags), to be taken
inside.revealing tops are not at all suitable
- Shoes are always to be removed and left outside.
- In some cases, photography is not allowed.
- Sometimes the washing of hands and feet and the covering of your
head are required.
- Please be aware that some temples may not grant entrance to
non-Indians.

6. MONEY - US$, Euro , GBP
All credit cards are accepted in India, although American Express is not
popular. For your pocket money we suggest you take U.S. dollar, Euro or
pound sterling travellers cheques with you. These can then be changed at
most large hotels or at Thomas Cook outlets into the local currency which is
Indian Rupees.
As an example :
US$ 1 = 45 Indian Rupees ( approx )
Euro 1 = 52 Indian Rupees ( approx ).
GBP 1 = 72 Indian Rupees ( approx )
ATM machines can be found in the main cities but they are few and far
between.
7. SHOPPING
Please note that when shopping, bartering about the price is all part of
the fun and games and it is expected of you, even when the shopkeeper tells
you he only has fixed prices! But, please think carefully before you buy and
don't be pressurised into buying something you don't really want or think
too expensive. Remember that generally, if you change your mind later, the
shopkeeper will not take back the goods and give you a refund.
Please also note that the company ANGLO INDIAGO is not responsible in any
way for problems which may arise between you and the shopkeepers.
8. TIPPING
In the service industry, tipping is very important and expected. In some
cases the salaries are extremely low and these people depend on tips.
The people who should be tipped are: Porters at airport or railway
stations, your chauffeur at the end of your tour, porters at your hotel,
room service boys and housekeeping boys, the waiter in the restaurant.
Please note: If using a public taxi or autoricksha (tuc-tuc) you agree on a
price before you leave and it is not expected of you to give a tip.
9. HOTEL BILLS
Please check your hotel bill carefully before paying - mistakes are only
human.
10. TRAVELLING TIMES & ROAD CONDITIONS
Please note that estimated travelling times are approximate. The time
depends on many factors; road conditions, railway crossings, traffic jams
etc.etc. As there are no motorways in India, road space is shared with herds
of cows and goats, camel carts, tractors, pilgrims, elephants, villagers and
anything else moving from A to B. Distance covered is approximately 50 - 60
km per hour.
11. FOOD & DRINK
Apart from taking a cup of "Chai" - Indian tea - we do not
suggest you eat or drink anything from the street vendors or wayside "dhabas"
which are the stops for the truck drivers. Steer away from salads, fruits
which need to be peeled and ice cubes in your drinks. Your chauffeur will
know restaurants which are safe and clean on the road or in the towns so
check with him before you go to eat somewhere. If you are sensitive to a
change of food, avoid spicy dishes and avoid meat dishes. There is lots of
good vegetarian food throughout India which is a safer bet. Good hotels have
high standards of hygiene and so all food, including fruit, salads and ice
cubes, can be consumed here. During your traveling days, we suggest you have
bananas, mineral water and packets of biscuits, nuts and crisps with you in
the car.
12. FESTIVALS
Please note that if you are traveling on a particular Festival day, it is
possible that monuments and museums and possibly shops too will be closed.
Examples are:
- Festival of Holi which usually falls sometime in March,
- Gandhi's Birthday on the 2nd October
- Independence Day on the 15th August and
- Republic Day on the 26th January.
- Please be aware that some temples may not grant entrance to
non-Indians.
|
Please note that Festival Days are decided on according to the
lunar calendar and are often not known until shortly beforehand. This can
affect your sightseeing schedule.
13. RECONFIRMATION OF INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS.
- For International flights airlines require you to report for
check in 3 hrs prior to departure if you are flying economy class.
- Return flights should be reconfirmed at least 72 hrs prior to
departure. Anglo Indiago will do this for you on request, however we
are not responsible if the request is not made to us and seats are
released by the airlines.
- Independence Day on the 15th August and
- Republic Day on the 26th January.
- Please be aware that some temples may not grant entrance to
non-Indians.

14. BAGGAGE RECLAIM UPON ARRIVAL
It is quite customary that an Airport employee will remove bags from the
conveyor belt after one round. This could mean that when you arrive at the
belt, your bags have already been removed. Check at the end of the belt
where it disappears at the back. Often there will be a whole group of
luggage on the ground there.
