The magic
begins already when you commence your descent into Tribhuvan Airport at
Kathmandu. The spectacular views of the Annapurnas and the Himalayas are
your first welcome to the Kingdom of Nepal.
Here in Nepal the rivers are holy and the mountains are gods. Kathmandu,
the capital, lies in the valley known as "the Valley of the Gods".
Here are situated no less than seven World Heritage Sites; Kumari, the
Virgin Goddess, Swayambhu Stupa, Bodnath Bouddha Stupa, Pashupatinath, Patan
Durbar Square, Bhaktapur and the Durbar Square of Kathmandu itself.
Where do you start to discover the many facets of this fantastic country?
Maybe by taking an early morning mountain flight. Within minutes of leaving
Kathmandu airport you will be eye to eye with some of the most beautiful and
brilliant peaks in the whole world, the Himalayas. Fly over their entire
length until you reach Sagarmatha, the mother of all rivers, the Mount
Everest!
Or take an early morning hot air balloon flight. As the sun rises over the
peaks, you rise up from the valley to see the whole range of mountains in
their morning glory.
A morning's drive from Kathmandu will take you to so many other interesting
places; Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Pokhara and the Royal Chitwan National Park,
set in the south of Nepal in the jungle of the Terai.
Nagarkot is a tiny settlement clinging to the hillside at 2100 meters. It's
a good place to begin either short hikes or stay overnight to marvel at the
sunset or sunrise over the peaks, from the Annapurnas in the west to Everest
itself in the east.
Dhulikel is a
forty minute drive to the east of Kathmandu. Set amongst terraced hillsides,
you can enjoy the views of the snowy central Himalayas from your hotel
garden.
Pokhara nestles beneath the snow-crested Massif of the Annapurna Range on
the banks of Phewa Lake. It's most famous peak is the Machhapuchhre - of
Fishtail Peak. This is the beginning of many trekking holidays but also a
wonderful and restful place to soak up the beauty of this fertile valley
with it's sub-tropical flora and fauna. Poinsiettas, citrus and banana trees
line the rice and mustard fields. It's inhabitants are mostly Newar and
Gurung farming families.
Chitwan is a morning's drive south west from Kathmandu. This is the dense
habitat of rhinoceros, gaur, sloth bear and tiger, best seen early morning
from the back of an elephant. The best way to take advantage of all Chitwan
has to offer is to stay in one of the many lodges situated inside the park.
Nepal is an excellent choice as an extension tour of northern India.
Passing through Agra and Khajuraho you can take the one hour flight after
visiting the holy city on the River Ganges, Varanasi.
